Buck-boost non-isolated DC-DC converters offer wide range input and outputs

TDK Corporation has introduced the 300W-rated TDK-Lambda RGC series of ruggedised, non-isolated DC-DC converters. With an input voltage of 9V to 53V, these buck-boost converters provide adjustable output voltages from 9.6V to 48V or 5V to 28V with output currents of up to 12.5A. The series is intended to be employed in harsh environment applications, including robotics, AGVs, communications, COTS, and industrial and portable battery-powered equipment.

In a 1/16th brick form factor, measuring 38.1mm x 49.5mm x 13mm, the converters are encapsulated to supply a higher resistance to shock and vibration with qualification to MIL-STD-810G. The five-sided aluminium die-cast housing with mounting tabs lowers radiated EMI and allows conduction cooling to a cold-plate for fan-less operation.

The models provide two voltage and current combinations supporting operation from 12V, 18V, 24V, 36V and 48V batteries and power sources. The buck-boost topology enables the converter to sustain regulation even when the output voltage exceeds the input. When the converter is put on standby utilising the remote on/off, the input current may be reduced to 0.25mA to save the battery charge. Wide input ranges simplify inventory management with a single part number covering multiple input and output voltages.

With up to 97% efficiencies, power losses are minimised, permitting the products to function in harsh environments with case temperatures of -40C to +115C. The basic feature models comprise an output voltage adjustment pin, remote sense, negative logic remote on/off, input under-voltage, over-current and thermal protection.

All models carry the CE and UKCA marks for the Low Voltage and RoHS Directives and are developed to the IEC/UL/CSA/EN 62368-1 safety standards. Evaluation boards are obtainable for quick and easy testing.
